Youth Voter Turnout Soars: ECP's Student Awareness Workshops Prove Successful
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has seen a significant increase in youth voter turnout, thanks to its student awareness workshops. Between November 2021 and November 2024, the ECP conducted 2,274 workshops across the country, targeting higher secondary schools, colleges, and universities.
The Impact
These workshops have paid off, with youth voter turnout rising from 37% in the 2018 general elections to a record 48% in the 2024 general elections. This success has prompted the ECP to launch another round of student awareness workshops nationwide, starting from March 2025, in preparation for upcoming elections.
Empowering the Next Generation
The ECP's efforts to boost electoral literacy among young people are part of a broader initiative to foster a more inclusive and participatory democratic process. By educating students about their voting rights and responsibilities, the ECP aims to create a more informed and engaged citizenry.
Awareness Sessions for Persons with Disabilities
In line with this goal, the ECP recently organized a voter awareness session at the Government Institute for Children with Hearing and Speech Impairment in Mingora, Swat. The session aimed to promote electoral awareness and inclusivity among persons with disabilities, ensuring their active participation in the democratic process.
A Collaborative Effort
The ECP's initiatives are supported by international organizations and local civil society groups, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting democratic values and practices. By working together, these stakeholders can help create a more inclusive and participatory electoral process that benefits all citizens.
