ELIGIBLE VOTERS SHALL HAVE TO PRODUCE THEIR NATIONAL IDENTITY CARDS AT THE POLLING STATIONS FOR CASTING THEIR VOTES
Islamabad, the 11th December, 2007.— The Spokesman of the Election Commission has drawn attention towards a news item which has appeared in a section of the Press stating therein that any voter not in possession of Computerized National Identity Card will be eligible to cast his vote by producing Driving License, Passport, Domicile or any other identification document to the satisfaction of the polling personnel, which is incorrect and misleading.
2. The Spokesman has clarified that production of the National Identity Card is compulsory in pursuance of Section 33 of the Representation of the People Act, 1976, which is reproduced here-under:
Voting Procedure.---(1) Where an elector presents himself at the polling station to vote, the Presiding Officer shall issue a ballot paper to the elector after satisfying himself about the identity of the elector and shall, for that purpose, require the elector to produce his identity card provided for in the National Registration Act, 1973 (LVI of 1973) or issued under the National Database and Registration Authority Ordinance, 2000 (VIII of 2000).
