EU DELAGATION CALLS ON CEC

Islamabad, the 18th February, 2015. -       An European Union delegation for relations with South Asia of the European Parliament called on the Hon’ble Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza today at the Election Commission’s Secretariat, Islamabad and discussed views on the priorities of the Election Commission of Pakistan for consolidating the electoral process and reforms.

            The Hon’ble CEC welcomed the participants and showed his pleasure over the meeting while exchanging views on various electoral matters. He said at the movement the ECP is focusing on its constitutional obligations such as Senate elections, LG elections in KPK, Punjab and Sindh, delimitation of local councils in Punjab and Sindh, revision of Electoral Rolls to include 7.8 million new NIC holders in the voters’ list and training of returning officers and polling staff etc.

            The Hon’ble CEC further informed the participants that the ECP intends to improve the electoral process by focusing, inter alia, on the following areas:

i-              Legal framework—unification of electoral laws, legal and constitutional amendments,

ii-             Training and capacity building of ECP officers and officials,

iii-            Operationalization of computerized electoral rolls particularly focusing on filling the difference of 10 million women who have not been registered/issued NICs,

iv-           Development of Geographical Information System (GIS) for bringing more transparency in delimitation of constituencies, and building IT infrastructure for connecting field offices with ECP Secretariat etc.

        The delegation appreciated the steps being taken by the ECP for strengthening electoral reforms in Pakistan.
