LOCAL GOVERNMENT BYE-ELECTION SOON.

Lahore, the 20th September, 2008: Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad, Secretary, Election Commission of Pakistan, presided over a meeting in the office of the Provincial Election Commissioner, Punjab, Lahore, and said that Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, Mr. Justice (R) Qazi Muhammad Farooq has directed to conduct bye-elections to the three tiers of Local Govt. Institutions will be held within couple of weeks. He said that more than 1500 seats are vacant in the Province of the Punjab of different categories. In Zila Councils 02 seats of Nazim, 01 Naib Nazim, 19 seats of women, 05 Peasant Workers and two seats of Minority categories are vacant. In Tehsil / Town Councils, 11 seats of Nazim, 6 women, 7 Peasant Workers and 7 Minorities categories are vacant in the Province of the Punjab, whereas 151 of Union Nazim, 51 Naib Union Nazim, 155 Muslim General Seats, 98 Muslim Women seats, 66 Peasant Workers General Seats, 125 Peasant Workers Women seats, 1045 Minorities seats are vacant in 1441 Union Councils of 35 Districts of Punjab Province. He said that in first phase bye-elections to the vacant seats of Union Councils shell be held to complete the Electoral college for conduct of bye-elections of Zila Councils as well as Tehsil / Town Councils.
2. The Secretary, inaugurated most Sophisticated IT Infrastructure installed to cater the Computerized Electoral Rolls at Provincial Headquarters in Punjab Province. While addressing the participants to the meeting Kanwar Muhammad Dilsahad, highlighted the need of this sophisticated infrastructure to cater huge data of Computerized Electoral Rolls in Pakistan with its ownership of Election Commission of Pakistan and declared achievement of this goal as of international standard, which will certainly help in future General / Local Government and Bye-Elections and also will enable Election Commission of Pakistan to up-date these Electoral Rolls at its own level.
3. Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad also reviewed the progress so far made by the Electoral Reform Committee and said that the reports have already been received from all the Working Groups on the basis of their extensive deliberations, discussions and recommendations by National / International Elections Observers / Groups / Mission’s reports, suggestions of the Political parties, Civil society as well as professional feed back of Working Groups consisting upon the Deputy Election Commissioners / Assistant Election Commissioners and Senior Officers of Election Commission of Pakistan Secretariat, Islamabad / Provincial Election Commissioners.
