PRESS STATEMENT

IN CONNECTION WITH
ELECTION TO THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT - 2007
It is constitutional responsibility of the Chief Election Commissioner to hold and conduct Election to the office of the President of Pakistan as Returning Officer for that Election.
2. Under the provisions of Second Schedule to the Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner is required to announce the Schedule for Presidential Election and conduct that Election so as to complete the whole process in relation thereto within the stipulated period.
3. For the purpose of holding Presidential Election, the Chief Election Commissioner, in his capacity as Returning Officer, is also required to appoint Presiding Officers to preside at the Meeting of the Members of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) as well as the Meetings of the Members of the Provincial Assemblies. Besides, he is required to fix the date, time and place for depositing Nomination Papers; holding Scrutiny; publishing the List of Validly Nominated Candidates after Withdrawals and holding the Poll.
4. The Nomination Forms for contesting Election to the office of the President are available in the ECP Secretariat, Islamabad as well as in the offices of the Registrar of the High Court of the Province concerned and the Provincial Election Commissioners, as under:

5. The term of the President in office is to expire on the 15th November, 2007. Thus, under the Constitution, Election to the office of the President is required to be held between the period commencing from 15th September to 15th October, 2007. Therefore, I, Justice ® Qazi Muhammad Farooq, Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan do hereby notify today the 20th September, 2007, the following Schedule for Election to the office of President of Pakistan:

Filing of nomination papers with the Returning Officer/Presiding Officer at Islamabad and with each of the Presiding Officers at Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.
Scrutiny of nomination papers by the Returning Officer at Islamabad.
Withdrawal of candidature before the Returning Officer at Islamabad.
Publication of the list of validly nominated candidates.
Polling day and Polling time.
Place of the Poll.
