Islamabad, the 30th January, 2013.— The Hon’ble Members Election Commission today held a meeting with the Secretary, Ministry of Defence in relation to the demand of the leaders of the political parties staging sit-in outside the office of the Provincial Election Commissioner.
2. Threadbare discussion on the issues related to security of the electoral rolls verification process was carried out. The Secretary, Ministry of Defence assured that provision of secure environment for door to door verification exercise being undertaken by the Election Commission is being taken care of and will also be ensured in future. Both sides agreed to undertake special security measures in potentially troubled areas. Security arrangements will be extended on required basis to ensure a smooth and transparent verification process.
3. Secretary, Ministry of Defence also informed the Commission that an Army Assistance Cell has been co-located in the office of the Provincial Election Commissioner, Sindh for better coordination between Election Commission and Military authorities in Karachi. Detailed coordination will be done by the Provincial Election Commissioner, Sindh and his staff with military authorities in Karachi and the arrangements will be reviewed periodically through meetings at Provincial and Central levels.
4. Towards the end of the meeting, the Secretary Defence assured the Election Commission that all steps have been taken to ensure the security for electoral rolls verification exercise being carried out by Election Commission of Pakistan in Karachi.
